Carrot Colored Words

The dialogue goes something like this:
"I love you," I say, it being the end
of our conversation. "I love you,"
you sigh weakly after long silence.

I challenge your desultry reply.
"It's the word," you say. "It's been
overused. We need to find a better."
I accept the task. For nights I search

for carrot colored words, for words
with tails and purple horns and long
red sashes round their middles. I scream
for green words with yellow spotted stomachs.

My doctor friend tells me how patients
miss medical terms. A woman in Georgia
spoke of suffering from "Smiling Mighty
Jesus," meaning spinal meningitis.

Another had "Fireballs of the Eucharist,"
in reality fibroids fo the uterus. If I
could choose, I'd take Jesus, too. And those
fireballs beat fibroids all to hell.

That's the kind of word I want. I fireball
you. I smiling mighty Jesus you. It's cute
and satisfies your need for something new
but it's not exactly what I mean to say.

What I mean to say is--if I was dying
and I could choose one person in the world
to sit and hold my hand and hear whatever
words I had to say--it would be you.

and I know no better term for that
than love. If I find one, I'll let you know.

Note: A friend broke this out today at work and it was so striking, I had to post it. It's cheesier the second time around, but the first run through is so fun.

it's super cute. honestly i think sometimes the word "love" can get old ya know. but that's why it's so important to show it more than just saying it. that way the ones you love will never forget. :)

I think it's very important to say it too. There's just something about hearing those words that make your day better.

Sometime a long time ago (either when we were engaged or working at RCA) Nathan had said, "I love you" to me and I thought he'd said "olive juice." I don't remember what the situation was, but for whatever reason I was busy or something and couldn't immediately have him repeat what he'd said so I was totally puzzled why he'd said "olive juice" to me. After wondering for awhile about it I asked him what he'd said and he told me, and it became the code word. So over the phone or in public we don't have to get mushy, just say "can you get me a big can of olive juice?" :)

Capt. Caf - I agree it's important to show love in addition to saying it. What's interesting is people's different perceptions of what it means to show love (I've never read the book, but it's often come up in conversations - the Five Love Languages... it talks about five fundamental ways we perceive love and how it can get confusing if we don't perceive it the way someone else is expressing it or vice versa. Interesting concepts)

Big Red - I totally fireball you, buddy. Have a great day.

Brock - yeah, it really is. Don't you love good poetry?

Feather Sky - That's a great story. Do you still use the code? Maybe you could liven things up a little and tell him you smiling mighty Jesus him every now and then :)

Feather Sky, that sounds like something that would happen to me. Itis amazing, when one starts to lose their hearing, what funny things other people "say".
