Snip, snip...

We had a women's church activity recently where we learned how to cut men's hair. It brought me back to the memory of my first time cutting a man's hair. His name was Kelly, and he had a crush on me. I can't imagine why else he would have let me get scissors near his head. Anyhow, he still encouraged me to try after I'd explained that this was untrod territory. Within the first few snips, I learned not to cut across horizontally unless you intend "steps." That wasn't too hard to remedy, though. The big mistake was with the clippers. I had used them to clean up the neck area and was catching a few hairs around his ears when I slipped up and shaved a horizontal line even with the top of his ear. I tried to fix it by evening out the area below it. The result was a sort of box around his ear. Well, what I did to one, I had to do to the other, right?

All in all, it was a learning experience. He never complained about the haircut. In fact, he kept it for almost a week before going to get it fixed. I don't think he left the house during that week, but still...

Who taught the lesson? You? Did you learn some great techniques?

I was enlisted by a couple of guy friends to be their hairstylist. One backed out after he saw the cutting job I did to a mutual guy friend (I cut a short bald line into one side of his head, but the rest of his head was decent enough), and the other had curly hair and constantly reassured me that I couldn't mess his hair up.

The first guy's hair was horrid. He actually let it grow out for about two weeks before he had someone do damage control.

That's cool about learning how to cut hair though. That will be a useful skill in the future.

brock - remember that one sketch i drew of you where it looked like you had down syndrome - not because i intended it to look that way, but because i'm not very good at drawing yet?... are you really sure you'd want me to have a go at your hair?
(btw, what color would the dye be?)

quietelk - how funny! did you wear a hat to work? she's gotten a lot better since then.

bfk - a sister going to beauty school taught the lesson. (me?! yeah right :) i learned how to do it right. too bad i couldn't stay to practice.

mandie - glad to know i'm not the only one ;) have you gotten more practice since then?

hp - tee hee... i wonder if i can rustle up that picture i took of my first time cutting a girl's hair (besides my own)...

Unfortunately, I haven't had anymore practice. The guy friend who's hair I butchered, still asks me from time to time to cut his hair, but I have more or less lost my will to try at this point. I'll wait until I can ask my sister-in-law to show me how to cut guy's hair before I try again.

I've only cut hair once. I was five, maybe six. I decided that I would give my brother (2.5 years younger) a haircut. I remember thinking that I would do a good job and I wouldn't cut it all off either. So I snipped here and snipped there. I thought I did a great job. Our mom didn't agree. He had to be taken to the barber and all that could be done was to buzz it all off. We have a picture of my brother Paul at the barber. He does *not* look happy.

I think I did a pretty good job on Nathan's first hair cut ;) haha, it was so messed up that I had to buzz it down to a #2 cut the whole way around!! Everyone at his flight school AND work laughed at him. He wore a hat every day for months!!

To be fair, I let Nathan cut my hair. He took probably about 4 inches off!! But he did a good job (not that i'm ever going to let him cut it again!!)

At RedCliff I cut several kids hair. With just scissors I buzzed at least 10 boys and 2 girls heads. Nothin' but stubble left. (one girl wanted it cut just for kicks, the other had lice).

mandie - i know what you mean; i've been scared to try again after the first mishap

brock - hmm... maybe i can get your hair to look like mine in the 'strangest headache' post... make sure and bring green as one of the colors...

bigred - (referring to our conversation around 'settlers') are you really gonna let me cut your hair?! i'll sharpen my scissors when i go home this weekend!

bfk - one of my mission companions got lice really bad and had to cut her hair super short. she was traumatized! but before she got it cut super short, she let another sister take a few inches off, and that sister left it uneven, so she let me have a go at it. fun shtuff.
